9. Champagne Ayala Brut Majeure NV in Gift Box

“A Champagne which I have instantly fallen in love with last year not only for the supreme quality that Chef de Cave Caroline Latrive has created, but its sensible pricing. Ayala gets top marks from me for it’s quality to price ratio even when it’s sister house is Bollinger. The wines are unshowy, thrillingly precise and elegant. One of the original eighteen Grandes Marques Champagne Houses, Ayala’s noble history dates back to 1860 when Edmond de Ayala received the magnificent Château as the dowry for his wedding. It was acquired by the Bollinger Family in 2005 when a major programme of investments began that is evident in the current line-up of cuvées. Ayala’s vineyard holdings are minuscule. Virtually everything is bought in and its relationship with influential Bollinger, which because of its very different style is not in competition for the same fruit, means it more or less has its pick of the grapes, ensuring thatCaroline Latrive, its chef de cave of seven years always has the very best-quality fruit to work with. This is very necessary because Ayala’s style is dry – and apparently has been so ever since King Edward VII requested a dry wine from Ayala, at a time when many champagnes were made much sweeter, because he wished to drink it as an aperitif.Chardonnay forms 40 per cent of the blend of the Brut Majeur NV. A smear of sugar is useful for hiding a lack of quality, but Ayala is always laserlike in its focus. “We make wines without the artifice of make-up,” says Latrive. She works with many small vinifications each harvest – there are 100 tanks in the Ayala cellar, each containing a discrete wine – which gives her a complex palette to work with when it comes to making a blend.” – Michael Robins, Jeroboams

Michael is offering Ayala to the Society @ £27.70 per bottle / £166.24 per case of 6 bts. Please get in touch if you are interested. – BD

3. Samas Isola dei Nuraghi (6 November)

“In music, there was the Million Dollar Quartet – when Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis came together to produce a work of genius. In wine, the equivalent is AgriPunica. Tenuta San Guido’s Sebastiano Rosa, Sardinian wine mogul Antonello Pilloni and the late, great Giacomo Tachis banded together in 2002 to found the Agricola Punica wine estate, and apply the Super-Tuscan approach to Carignano del Sulcis.

Samas is named after the Punic God of the Sun. Vermentino and Chardonnay grapes grown in sandy soil are hand harvested at dawn to maintain characteristic varietal notes and freshness. Cryomaceration techniques prevent oxidation, resulting in a bright, vibrant wine. With prolonged fermentation using selected yeasts at controlled temperatures (60˚ Fahrenheit), the wine remains on the less for approximately 40 days. Vinified separately, the varieties rest in small concrete vats for 3 months once blended. To retain maximum character and freshness, Samas is neither filtered nor clarified.

Tasting Notes: Vivid yellow straw colour with soft greenish hints, the typical bouquet of tropical fruit and citrus notes with a distinguish Mediterranean flavour (sage fragrancy). On the palate this wine is silky and well balanced by a moderate alcohol content (12,5%), good salinity and freshness notes. To be stored at medium-low temperatures on the range of 15-17 °C and to be served a bit cooler (around 12-13 °C). It matches very well all fish-made dishes, any white meat or it can be simply savoured as aperitif.

Grape Composition: 80% Vermentino – 20% Chardonnay

Std price – £67.20 per case 6 bottles  Now £60.65 per case 6 bottle

Stocks limited so act fast to avoid disappointment- price valid until 31 Dec or until stock lasts.” – Steve (Durrant), Armit Wines

3. Armit Wines Stonecroft Offer (20 October 2019)

ABOUT: Stonecroft is a small, family owned winery in the Gimblett Gravels, Hawke’s Bay. Established in 1982, Stonecroft has the oldest Syrah vines in New Zealand. The winery produces only a very small number of bottles (total production around 3000 cases per vintage), using traditional methods. It is well known for its Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon/ Merlot blends, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay wines. Pruning and harvesting are carried out by hand. All three vineyards are certified organic, and yields are very low. Stonecroft’s approach in the winery is one of minimal intervention.

  1. 2017 Chardonnay Organic @ £13.00 per bottle: Pale gold colour. A fruity bouquet with peach and nectarine, suggestions of cashew nut and toast and a flinty edge. The palate sees stone fruit flavours come through on the palate with nutty notes and a long length. The wine has a creamy mouthfeel and hints of butter and straw. (Reviews: 4/5 – Michael Cooper)
  2. 2017 Viognier Organic @ £13.00 per bottle: Ripe, fleshy viognier with classic apricot, tree fruit and nutty yeast lees flavours. A silken-textured wine with good palate weight and a lengthy finish. Nicely integrated oak. Should age well. (Reviews: 95 points – Bob Campbell MW)
  3. 2017 Gewurztraminer Organic @ £13.00 per bottle: Spicy and exotic with white fleshed fruits, ginger and a touch of baked pineapple lure, floral too. On the palate lightly creamy texture with intense and spicy fruit flavours; a hint of ginger again and suggestions of orange and citrus peel. (Reviews: 4/5 – Michael Cooper)
  4. 2014 Ruhanui Organic @ £15.76 per bottle: 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon from New Zealand’s finest terroir for Bordeaux blends. Dense mocha-edged damson and forest berries on the nose and palate are lifted by fresh herbal tones and backed by sweet anise and cedar oak spice. (Reviews: – 95 points Bob Campell MW)
  5. 2016 Undressed Syrah Organic @ £15.76 per bottle: For the Undressed Syrah, just three barrels of Syrah from the Roy’s Hill Vineyard and did not add any sulphur to the wine. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. No added sulphites. (Reviews: – 90 points Bob Campell MW)
  6. 2014 Serine Syrah Organic @ £11.30 per bottle: Matured for 18 months in French oak casks (35% new). Fresh and elegant, rather than powerful, it is deeply coloured, with a floral, slightly earthy bouquet. Vibrantly fruity, it is a youthful, medium to full-bodied red, with strong plum/spice flavours, showing clear-cut varietal character, and very good density and complexity. (Reviews:  89 points Vinous Antonio Galloni)
  7. 2018 Crofters Syrah @ £12.15 per bottle: From their Fernhill Vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels district, this youthful charmer is filled with dark plum, blueberry, floral and spice characters with subtle game complexity. The palate shows excellent purity and silky texture, beautifully framed by fine tannins. Lovely elegant expression of the variety showing attractive fruit intensity and refinement. (Reviews:  89 points Wine Enthusiast)

The Stonecroft Reserve Syrah 2014 is an artfully blended red wine, produced from the 8 best Syrah barrels of the vintage. 3. La Rioja Alta Viña Ardanza 2010 ‘Selección Especial’

“2010 is widely regarded as one of the very finest vintages in recent memory for Rioja. Julio Sáenz, head winemaker at La Rioja Alta S. A., called it “spectacular” – a description which is well and truly borne out in the Viña Ardanza 2010. We are sure you are familiar with the wine – it is something of a wine trade favourite, and with good reason. The value for money is almost incomparable.

The 2010 is particularly remarkable as it has been declared a ‘Selección Especial’. This is the highest praise from the winemakers, a title only awarded to the wines and vintages that they rank among the best ever made. For Ardanza, this is only the fourth vintage to win the title, alongside the legendary 1964, 1973, and 2001. Viña Ardanza 2010 is a blend of 80% Tempranillo from the La Cuesta and Montecillo vineyards in the Rioja Alta subregion, and 20% Garnacha from La Perdriza in Rioja Oriental. This Garnacha is the key to Ardanza’s structure, aromatics, and concentration: these vines are actually higher in altitude than most of the Rioja Alta subzone, and sit on barren, free-draining soils made up with large pudding-stones similar to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. These two varieties are harvested and vinified separately, ageing around three years in American oak barrels which are produced in-house by La Rioja Alta S.A.’s own cooperage. During the maturation, the wine is racked by hand and by candlelight; La Rioja Alta S.A. are one of the handful of producers still to use this traditional technique in Rioja which ensure supple tannins and the savoury flavours that so defines their style.

Simply put, the Viña Ardanza 2010 is not to be missed. To secure your stock, we advise buying the wine ‘en primeur’ now – it will be in the UK in January 2020.” – Armit Wines

  • “2010 was a great vintage in Rioja in general and seems to be exceptional here, with a 2010 Viña Ardanza Selección Especial (what used to be Reserva Especial) that can challenge any of the recent vintages and hopefully can develop in bottle to reach the heights of years like 1973 or 1964. The wine is expressive, aromatic, very elegant and clean, with classical Rioja aromas of long aging in barrel and slow oxidation through the years in wood. The palate is polished and sleek but shows plenty of energy, with very fine, mostly resolved tannins and very good harmony and persistence. There is great complexity, and you could start smelling spice and smoke to move to earthy tones, hints of beef blood, cherries in liqueur, curry, diesel, old furniture and forest floor. A great Viña Ardanza!”
95 points, Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate
  • “Dried cherries, cedar, sandalwood, tar, treacle tart, cinnamon and vanilla. Medium body, fine-grained and very silky tannins for a wine of almost 10 years of age, bright and transparent acidity and a long, very spicy finish. Like going back in time and touching an ornate tapestry. The texture is mesmerizing.”
Drink now. 96 points, James Suckling

2. An Offer From Armit – Cantele: Pure Puglia

“This week we have been delighted to host Umberto Cantele, the third generation of one of Puglia’s most distinctive wine producing families. Based near Salento, on the tip of the heel of the Italian boot, they faithfully demonstrate the quality and value for money that can be found in the region. Here the long sunny days and cooling sea breezes produce bright, expressive, wonderfully drinkable reds. Their main aim is to be as true to possible to Puglia and to their local grape varieties, and so they focus on Primitivo and Negroamaro.

Primitivo is named after that fact that it ripens the earliest in the fields (‘il primo’!), known for its prune and dried fruit flavours due to the fact that the bunches ripen unevenly and some grapes begin to raisin on the vine before harvest. Cantele’s Primtivo displays these classic characteristics, but is also made from older bush vines, known locally as alberelli. This training offers great concentration and a supple texture. Careful handling has kept the acidity high, making it keeps it light on its feet; in fact it is a local tradition to pair this with firm white fish!

In Salice Salentino DOC Negroamaro (Niuru Maru in local dialect) is usually field-blended with interplanted Malvasia Nera, or more recently international varieties, to tame the high tannins and acidity common in the variety. Cantele, however, believe in producing the truest expression of this variety and so use 100% Negroamaro. Their experience with this variety, which they see as their signature, is clear. The vibrancy of the fruit and refreshing acidity makes this wine eminently drinkable, while demonstrating the inherent quality of the grape when made with skill. As a Riserva, this wine has spent 6 months in old French oak barriques and a further 18 months in bottle before release to further soften the tannins and add layers of spice and complexity – it is everything a Puglian red should be.” – Armit Wines

In 2018 the wine showcases a beautifully perfumed nose, with notes of orchard flowers and fresh citrus, with a rounder, fleshier body.

While absolutely perfect in Summer to accompany grilled fish or light salads, it will be a great addition to anyone cellar come wintertime (we just love it alongside roast chicken or cauliflower steak!). Pick up a bottle or two and start discovering this Sardinian gem.” – Armit Wines

Here the high rainfall and Atlantic influence produce fresh wines that complement Albariño’s body and stone fruit flavours. Lagar de Cervera is mostly produced from the O Rosal subzone, on the border with Portugal along the inlet for the Miño river. This is widely regarded as producing the best – and most typical – Albariño, with a dense granite bedrock that gives the wines intense minerality and more concentrated flavours.
The winemaking of Lagar de Cervera is directed by Julio Saenz of La Rioja Alta S.A., who own the property. After manual harvesting and destemming, the grapes were macerated at cold temperatures for 10 hours, before being pressed and fermented in stainless steel. This vintage, 15% of the wine underwent malolactic conversion, and the wine was kept on lees for around six months with some lees stirring. These techniques all contribute to an impressive depth, complexity, and richness that balances well with the elegance and poise of the variety.” – Armit Wines
“So many flowers here, including honeysuckle, daffodils, almonds and cherry blossom. The palate has a really expansive, fleshy feel for this variety, without the addition of oak, but the acidity is still forthright and still right on point. Drink now.”

5. UNESCO Prosecco – Biancavigna DOCG Brut 2017

HMWS on Cartize Hill, Valdobbiadene

“This month, the hills of Conegliano e Valdobbiadene, the heartland of Prosecco, were officially named a UNESCO World Heritage site. This designation proclaims the natural beauty of the area and officially recognises its contribution to the world of wine as a site of “exceptional universal value”. This is just the tenth site in the world to obtain this title as a “cultural landscape”, sharing this fame with Champagne, Burgundy, and the Langhe of Piedmont. This accolade is ten years in the making, driven by the winemakers of Prosecco Superiore DOCG themselves, and demonstrates their pride in their unique terroir and spectacular wines.

At Armit, we are equally proud to represent one of these top-quality producers, Biancavigna. The Estate is family owned and eco-friendly, with lighter bottles to reduce carbon emissions and a winery built exclusively from recycled materials. They are known for exploring the terroir in these hills to produce dry, site-driven wine exclusively from estate-owned grapes. This DOCG undergoes ageing three times the minimum, resulting in a fine mousse and wonderful aromatic intensity.”

Biancavigna DOCG Brut 2017 £79.76 case per 6 bottles (Winesearcher £102.60)

“Lime zest, peach blossom, and slate on the nose with a vibrant, mousse. Lean, crisp, and pure wine. Delicious.”

A. Bodegas Rafael Palacios

  1. Lauro do Bolo 2017 £89.50 per case of 6 – “Fermented in foudre (large oak), this is Rafa’s “entry-level” Godello but there is nothing simple about it; yields were incredibly low in the 2017 vintage due to frost and drought, so the fruit is even more concentrated and complex than normal. The nose is full of peach, crunchy pear and soft minerality, while the palate is taut and saline. There’s a citrus and mineral intensity, with real palate weight which creates a textured mouth-feel. This is a fascinatingly different wine from the previous vintage but nonetheless maintains that same streak of pure salinity that defines Rafa’s wines and which underlines why he is often referred to as the best white winemaker in Spain.”
    – Catriona Felstead MW

(Winesearcher: Average UK price £20.40 per bottle. HMWS offer £14.92 per bottle. Orders: BD 1 case, Les Wilson 1 case, Abdullah Kraam 1 case, Stephen Cameron 2 cases)

  1. As Sortes, Val de Bibei 2017 £208.30 per case of 6

“I have pretty much fallen hook line and sinker for the Godello grape over 2017, and you’d be hard pressed to find a better example (well okay, you can go to the top single-vineyard Sorte O Soro from the same producer but expect to spend quite a bit more). Rafael is the younger brother of the rather brilliant Alvaro Palacios, and has chosen to put the family winemaking talents into some of Spain’s best whites. This is vibrant in the fullest sense of the word, a physical wine that wakes you up and makes you smile, full of citrus, fleshy white pear, honeydew melon, touches of hazlenut and a taut confidence. Drinking Window now to 2025.” – Jane Anson, Decanter

“They hit the nail on the head with the harvest date of the 2016 Las Lamas, and the wine shows incredible precision, elegance and symmetry this year. I’ve often discussed with Ricardo Pérez Palacios how sensitive Mencía is with the harvest date and how the grape has a very short picking window, to the point that, in 2016, you feel one day difference. They have been fine-tuning this wine in the last few years, and the result is evident. 3,655 bottles and some larger bottles were filled in June 2018.” – Robert Parker, 96/100

3. HMWS Wine Offer – La Rioja Alta 904 Gran Reserva 2010

“We are very excited to announce one of the most hotly anticipated releases of the year: La Rioja Alta 904 Gran Reserva 2010. This is one of the best vintages in living memory, rated “excellent” by the Rioja Regulatory Council, and has already been awarded 97 points by Tim Atkin MW, one of the leading authorities on Spanish Wine. He also named it one of his “Wines of the Year”. We are certain that 904 is peerless in the fine wine world in terms of value for money, and its consistently high quality is second to none. We strongly recommend this wine whenever it is released, and this suggestion comes more heartily than ever with this phenomenal vintage.

The wine is only made in great vintages and released when the winery thinks it is ready to drink but also has decades of life ahead. It is made in the traditional style of Rioja that defines La Rioja Alta’s wines, aged for four years in home-made American oak casks and racked by candlelight every six months to produce an immensely complex, smooth wine that is uniquely characterful.” – Armit Wines

“A step up on the memorable 2009, this shows just how special the 2010 vintage was. Marrying fruit from Briñas, Villalba and Rodezno, it’s a perfectly judged marriage of Tempranillo with 10% Graciano. Savoury wild herb notes segue into a palate that’s focused, balanced and graceful with the concentration and backbone to age. 2019-35”

6. Matetic EQ Syrah 2014

“To me, [EQ] is consistently Chile’s best Syrah and arguably its best value red wine.” – Tim Atkin MW

“Matetic, one of the foremost wineries in Chile, made its reputation with Syrah. They were the first to produce the Rhone varietal in a cool climate in Chile, with stunning results. Today, we can offer one of their finest Syrahs, entering its drinking window now and available for immediate delivery.” – Armit Wines

The EQ Syrah has a name derived from the Spanish word for balance, ‘Equilibrio’, which is the wine’s central characteristic. 100% Syrah, the vines are grown on soils of decomposed granite, quartz, and volcanic material the El Rosario valley. The summer fogs and ocean breezes keep this area cool, resulting in an elegant, powerful wine that rivals much more expensive wines in terms of quality! Matetic are also one of the leading proponents of substantiable, organic, and biodynamic viticulture, with an array of certifications. This makes their wines doubly rewarding.

“They think cool-climate Syrah benefits from time in bottle, so they try to keep the 2014 EQ Syrah in bottle for at least one and a half years before selling it. They use grapes from three different granite-based soils, including volcanic tuff, which is quite unique in the region. A relatively cool year, 2014 was marked by a frost in the spring of 2013, which concentrated the fruit with lower yields and smaller bunches, and the wine fermented with some full clusters. It’s a concentrated and pungent Syrah, with classical Northern Rhône notes of black olives, violets and smoky bacon along with grainy tannins and very tasty flavors.”

4. Armit Wines 2009 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 Offer (19 January)

Vintage: Winter water reserves enabled the grapes to reach the end of the cycle in a balanced condition, despite significant heat and drought during the summer. Rain in mid-September slowed down grape ripening, resulting in good alcoholic and phenolic balance. It was a decisive turning point, producing a high-quality vintage as, after that, we enjoyed favourable weather that made this Gran Reserva possible.

Vineyards: Tempranillo (90%) and Graciano (10%) from vines over 60 years old in vineyards in Briñas, Labastida and Villalba.

Winemaking and ageing: The grapes were collected in boxes and transported to the winery in refrigerated vehicles to preserve all their integrity. After gentle destemming and crushing, the musts were put in stainless steel tanks where they underwent alcoholic fermentation at a controlled temperature for 17 days. Batches were selected and allowed to complete malolactic fermentation naturally over 78 days. In April 2010, the wine was transferred to 4-year-old American oak barrels (made in-house), where it stayed until April 2014. During ageing, the wine was racked every six months using traditional barrel-to-barrel methods. The final blend was bottled in November 2014.

Tasting: Outstandingly  intense cherry-red; clean and bright. The nose reveals a bouquet of great aromatic complexity, with balsamic notes of vanilla, toasted caramel, mint chocolate, tea leaves and cinnamon that gives way to elegant notes of stewed fruits and prunes. Creamy, well-balanced mouthfeel, with a harmonious freshness and smooth, well-tamed tannins that leave an elegant, complex finish.

Available for immediate delivery @ £156.20 per case 6 bottles In Bond. (also available in magnums @ £322 per case 6 magnums In Bond)
