Year 26 In The HMWS

The 26th ‘Academic Year’ of the Harrogate Medical Wine Society commenced on 1st September 2016. The annual membership fee remains at £15 pp and £25 per couple.

HOW DID WE DO IN YEAR 26

The Society had 90 members including 16 Life members. It is disappointing that we were able to attract only 4 new members in the past 12 months. So far, only 62 members have renewed their membership for Year 27. Reminders and invoices have been sent and it is hoped that the remaining 28 will do so during September.

It has been suggested that some join the Society merely to buy fine wine at low prices. Statistics make interesting reading: Only 62.5% of the membership bought wine through the Society, 65.5% attended at least one wine event, 12% took part in a wine tour and 16.7% did nothing!

The Society hosted 13 wine events at which members had the opportunity to taste 88 new fine wines. There were two wine tours – the third tour of Georgia and the first visit to Madeira. Only 8 members took part in the two tours.

Finance: The turnover (excluding wine events and tours) was £23,441.08. £21,221.43 was spent on wine. £448.09 was spent on subsidising undersubscribed tastings. Admin. cost (bank charges, accountancy, insurance, consumables etc.) were £993.43 which is 4.37% of turnover.
