Domaines Leflaive 2015 Release – Be Inspired by Burgundy

“These wines are impeccably made, with all the balance and complexity of the Domaine label wines. The consistency of quality was laudable: the Leflaive name is ever trustworthy.” – Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com

Domaine Leflaive is one of the legendary properties of the Côte de Beaune. Each year its production is snapped up by eager collectors to grace the finest cellars and dining tables the world over. Demand always outstrips supply so the wines are very hard to come by, even for the most ardent fan. Their production is small and in 2015 it was limited further by vintage conditions. It therefore brings us great pleasure to offer a selection of their stunning wines from outside of Puligny, under their Domaines Leflaive label. The wines come from carefully selected vineyards in Pouilly-Fuissé, Saint-Véran, Auxey-Duresses, Rully and the Mâcon. The grapes are grown following strict biodynamic principles and they are vinified in Puligny-Montrachet in exactly the same way as the Domaine wines.
This is the debut vintage for the Saint-Véran and Mâcon-Solutré wines under the Domaines label and these are remarkably precise and balanced wines which reflect all the finesse of the Domaine wines.

  • Mâcon-Solutré, £177 per 12 Bottles In Bond. An expressive bouquet of green plums and apples and a hint of something more exotic lead to a lively and refreshing palate. Warm citrus fruits and mouthwatering mineral characters are in perfect balance. Drink from release.
  • Saint-Véran, £237 per 12 bottles In Bond. A bouquet of bright soft stone fruits leads to a refreshing palate bursting with warm citrus flavours and a lively green apple character which makes the mouth water. Harmonious and refreshing, this wine will be delicious over the next few years. Drink from release.
  • Auxey-Duresses, £267 per 12 Bottles In Bond. Appealing and expressive, this wine has a pretty bouquet of white flowers with a hint of acacia honey and dried fruits. On the palate, succulent white peach and stone fruit characters are balanced by a chalky mineral quality which gives a sense of control. Drink from release.
  • Pouilly-Fuissé, £267 per 12 Bottles In Bond. A very elegant wine with a real sense of direction and purpose, it reveals a subtle bouquet of stone fruits and delicate citrus characters while the palate is refreshing and pure with soft white peach and green apple fruits. A little restrained at first, this wine has plenty of depth and the potential for longer ageing. Drink from 2017.
  • Rully 1er Cru, £292 per 12 Bottles In Bond. A refreshing and energetic wine with lovely pure fruit, there is an added tension and direction here. A bright bouquet of white stone fruits leads to a refreshing palate with lively green apple flavours underscored by a lean mineral character which leads to a long finish. Drink from 2017.

Champagne & Rioja – A Special Christmas Offer from Armit Wines

From a substantial Christmas Offer from Armit wines, the following, which represent quality at a good price, were selected for the HMWS:

  1. Delaire Graff Chenin Blanc 2014, South Africa (£9.78) Click here to read Jancis Robinson’s tasting notes. (6 cases bought)
  2. Champagne Pierre-Gimonnet Cuis 1er Cru NV (£20.67) (The Wine Society lists it at £24 per bottle) (6 cases bought)
  3. La Rioja Alta Viña Arana Reserva 2008, Spain – “Beautifully integrated and graceful reserva, 95% tempranillo and 5% mazuelo, extensively aged in American barrels” (£14.40) (The Wine Society lists it at £17.50 a bottle) (6 cases bought)

Case size: 6 bottles

(The offer ended on Monday 28 October. 18 cases were bought by 10 HMWS members)

(Noble Rot

Last month, the Society offered two ‘new’ wines to members – Delaire Graff Chenin Blanc 2014 from South Africa  and La Rioja Alta Viña Arana Reserva 2008, a blend of 95% tempranillo and 5% mazuelo, extensively aged in American barrels. When I say ‘new wines’, I mean they are new to the Society, not having been offered before. However, half a dozen savvy members bought the wines. I tried a bottle of the Chennin Blanc from Swartland a few days ago and found it very well made with great poise and balance, lean and austere. It is not the usual fruit bomb like a lot of Chenin from the Cape and I am sure, will improve in bottle and develop honeyed tones and fine texture. It confirmed the view that South Africa has a great future with this varietal. The Rioja, tasted last night, is of course, from one of the great traditional houses and in a wonderful year. It is soft and supple with fruit and oak beautifully integrated. It is drinking well now and partners roast lamb splendidly. Both wines offer great value for money and members who bought them should give themselves a pat on the back!)

*Terrango: Tarrango is a unique Australian grape variety, bred by CSIRO scientists in 1965 by crossing the Portuguese red grape variety Touriga with the versatile white grape Sultana. It was developed specifically to produce a light, fresh red wine ideal for summer drinking in the many countries with warm to hot summers. Named after the tiny township of Tarrango in the Mallee district of north-west Victoria, where it was designed to thrive, the vines bear generous crops that ripen late and maintain a fresh acidity and soft grapey flavour.

**Orange Muscat & Flora: Orange Muscat and Flora are two white grape varieties that are little known or planted in Australia. As the name suggests, Orange Muscat is part of the Muscat family and hails from the south-east of France. The variety is said to have derived its name from the golden hues the grapes develop when fully ripe and the strong aroma of orange blossom given off at vintage when the grapes are freshly crushed. Flora was developed at the Californian Agricultural Department Station in 1958 from a cross between the white grapes Semillon and Gewürztraminer. It produces a wine of fragrance and body with a fresh acid backbone. The fruit was grown at our Mystic Park vineyard and was harvested in late March and early April at baumé levels ranging from 14.6° to 15.2°.

WHY I BUY TORRES GRAN CORONAS

torres-gran-coronas-cabernet-sauvignon-reserva-penedes-spain-10295936I buy most vintages of Torres Gran Coronas for everyday drinking. In fact, it is the only wine from the Torres mid-lower range that I buy and cellar regularly. Here’s Jancis Robinson’s (MW) tasting notes on the currently averrable 2011 vintage: “Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo. Reductive notes on the nose. Full bore fruit on the palate, concentrated and bold. Long, spicy finish. There’s a lot to enjoy on the palate – it’s modern and smooth but retains a distinctive savoury flavour – but that reductive nose is a distraction.” She gave it a score of 16. The drinking window would be from now to 2018. The UK retail price is between £11 and £12. Considering that the 2010 vintage was offered to members by the HMWS at £7.55 per bottle in April this year, the current offer of the 2011 vintage at £7.49 is an absolute bargain! – BD

Part of the La Rioja Alta S.A. stable, Torre de Oña is one of the leading wineries in Rioja Alavesa. It is renowned for producing elegant wines reflecting the personality of some of the best vineyards in this prestigious area. Unusually in Rioja, Torre de Oña is a château style property surrounded by its vineyards. VIÑA ARDANZA 2007 MAGNUMS

La Rioja Alta S.A. is not just renowned for its Gran Reservas, but for the outstanding quality of the Reservas produced as well, and as such we are excited today to release magnums of Viña Ardanza 2007.
Another fantastic vintage, receiving 94 points from Luis Gutierrez (eRobertParker.com), the Ardanza 2007 was once again made with meticulous care using traditional methods and only released onto the market when ready to drink. A blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha, the wine was aged for between 30-36 months in American oak before being bottled in 2011, which far surpasses minimum ageing requirements.
An intense nose with spicy aromas of black pepper, cloves, cinnamon and vanilla which envelop fine notes of red berries gives way to a beautiful structure in the mouth, with balanced acidity and delicate, persistent tannins and an elegant, all-encompassing finish.
The younger brother to Gran Reserva 890, the Ardanza 2007 is also a wine to lay down, but is drinking fantastically now and offers good value for money. It is a good buy.

  • “The 2007 Viña Ardanza Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha, the Tempranillo from 30-year-old vineyards La Cuesta and Montecillo in the villages of Fuenmayor and Cenicero, and the Garnacha from old head-pruned vines at 600 meters altitude in Tudelilla, in Rioja Baja, from plots next to their Finca La Pedriza…The nose is very fresh, with notes of beef blood, iron, cherries in liqueur, some subtle leather and spices plus notes of autumn forest and truffles. The palate is more lively and has some tannins that would feel better integrated with some food or a little bit of time in bottle It was bottled in November 2011 and was released around September/October 2015, so by the time it hits the shelves it will be more polished. Great value for money.”
    94/100 points, Luis Gutierrez, eRobertParker.com
  • “80% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha. Produced from fruit exclusively grown in the bodega’s 360-ha vineyard holdings in the Rioja Alta region, and named after one of the region’s founding families. Intense, rich, many-layered vanilla-and-toast nose…Classic traditional rich rioja. Attractive freshness on the finish.”
    17/20 points, Jancis Robinson

Guigal

Some members have expressed an interest in the following six wines featured in the recent Guigal tasting. An order will be sent to Fells on Monday 25th April.

  1. Condrieu 2013: This is 100% Viognier from low yielding 30 year old vines grown on steep sand and granite terraced slopes, fermented in 30% new oak barrels. Despite the characteristic low acidity of viognier, the wine has undergone the malolactic and was aged in 100% new oak. Still, it is bone dry and fresh and a lovely wine to drink now. (16.5) (£28.48 HMWS) 1 case
  2. St Joseph Blanc 2014: 95% Marsanne, 5% Roussanne. Rich and intense nose. Dry, savoury and very seductive. Lovely balance. Would be even better in 4-5 years. (16.5) (£16.32 HMWS) 1 case
  3. St Joseph Rouge 2012: 100% Syrah aged for 16 months in second wine oak barrels. High acidity but has good fruit and the tannins are soft. Would improve for 4 to 5 years. (15) (£15.74 HMWS) 1 case
  4. Hermitage Rouge 2010: 100% Syrah macerated for 4 weeks in vats and aged for 36 months in oak barrels, 50% of which were new. A dark, rich and intense wine, lovely to drink even now. Well worth buying and cellaring. (17) (£35.06 HMWS) 1 case
  5. Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde 2010: 96% Syrah and 4% Viognier aged for 36 months in 50% new oak. Light, fragrant, soft and beautifully balanced. Delightful. (17) (£31.47 HMWS) 3 cases

Le Moulin “Côte Brune” La Viria “Côte Brune. 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier macerated for 4 weeks and aged for 38 months in new oak. Exceptional drinking. (17.5) (£49.51 HMWS)

2004 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 890

dsc_3546

“For the first time ever, famed Rioja producer La Rioja Alta S.A. have released their Gran Reserva 890 in magnum; a wine previously reserved only for the tables and cellars of the founding families.
Named after the winery’s first vintage (1890), only the best grapes from the oldest vines are selected for the Gran Reserva 890 resulting in a cuvée that reaches the very summit of what Rioja is capable of achieving. The 2004 vintage, officially rated ‘Excellent’ by the D.O.Ca. Rioja Control Board, was a year with near perfect growing conditions setting the ground for the 890 to display its hallmark elegance and structure.
The wine is only released onto the market when it is ready to drink, offering the drinker perfect ageing conditions without having to cellar it themselves. Do not hesitate to take this opportunity to purchase this wine in magnum for the first time ever.” – Armit Wines

  • La Rioja Alta is one of the most respected Rioja producers and one of my favourites, ever since their wines did so well in the very first comparative tasting I ever arranged, back in the early 1980s… – Jancis Robinson MW
  • Quite simply, these are some of the finest Riojas that can grace your cellar: complex, refined, classic but without compromising fruit intensity and to reiterate: wines that speak about where they come from. – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate
  • Vivid red. The nose displays an array of ripe red fruits, pungent flowers and exotic spices, with vanilla bean and coconut accents building with air. Sweet, broad and luscious, offering intense cherry-vanilla and raspberry liqueur flavors that deepen on the back half. Shows excellent depth as well as finesse, with velvety tannins adding shape to the very long, gripping finish. This suave, seamless Rioja spent six years in American oak barrels.
    93/100 points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous.com, November 2015
  • We had a great harvest in 2004, with abundant water allowing for proper vine development, and favourable weather throughout the growing cycle meaning that the grapes arrived at the onset of ripening in the best possible condition. Good diurnal temperature variation lead to a very slow and balanced ripening process, which was particularly beneficial for our oldest vineyards. For me the 2004 is a very special wine, from a truly great vintage.
Julio Saenz, Rioja Alta S.A. Winemaker

Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta

  • The stunning, historic Pieve Santa Restituta is owned by none other than the revered Angelo Gaja. The estate takes its name from the tiny church of Santa Restituta, which has been an important local place of worship since the 4th century. When Angelo Gaja bought the estate in 1994, he set about restoring the property to its former glory. Today, its immaculately manicured vineyards and state of the art cellars bear all the hallmarks of this maestro’s unequivocal pursuit of quality. There is no doubt that the Brunello di Montalcino produced here is “easily among the finest in the entire appellation” (Antonio Galloni).
  • We are delighted to offer the latest releases from Pieve Santa Restituta. Angelo Gaja’s 2011 Brunellos are extremely elegant and richly flavoured with great potential for ageing, though, unlike the powerful and unyielding 2010s, they already display signs of warm, rich accessibility and bountiful fruit concentration. Pieve Santa Restituta’s exceptional Brunello di Montalcino normale and the two unique single vineyard wines, Rennina and Sugarille, are truly remarkable.
Gaja’s Brunellos are the first of our releases from this superb appellation and, simply put, these wines are not to be missed. – Armit Wines
  • “The grapes for Brunello 2011 come from both the vineyard named Deserti, in the area of Torrenieri – which is located northeast of Montalcino village – and from a selection of Rennina and Sugarille vineyards that surround the church of Santa Restituta – southwest of Montalcino village. Deserti vineyard has a northwest and southwest exposures, and its soil is a well-balanced mix of sand, clay and tuff. The area is windy and characterized by significant night-and-day temperature variation. The 2011 Brunello opens with a bouquet of wildflowers and red berries, followed by fresh balsamic notes, notably sweet liquorice and thyme. The palate is very clean, with flavours of fresh plum and red cherry, well integrated wood aromas and silky tannins.” – Gaja
  • “The 2011 is complex and refined with dark cherry aromas intermingled with notes of dried summer fruits and wild flowers. The palate is smooth and satisfying with refreshing red plum and bight cherry fruit flavours balanced by seamless tannins and refreshing acidity. Attractive and very classic in its style, this wine will be delicious to drink over the next few years but will age well for at least a decade.” – James Snoxell, Head of Buying, Armit Wines

2005 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 Magnums

We are delighted to offer the release of magnums of Rioja Alta’s exceptional 2005 Gran Reserva 904. The heartlands of La Rioja Alta are in the finest sites of the Rioja Alta region. The Estate’s Gran Reserva 904 marks the date when the Ardanza winery was merged with La Rioja Alta, S.A. in 1904. A producer steeped in history, three of their wines are named after members of the founding families – Alberdi, Ardanza and Arana.
Our release of 2005 Gran Reserva 904 bottles was one of our most successful fine wine offers of last year, and it’s easy to see why. The sheer quality of the wine, matched with the reasonable pricing and the maturity of the wine on release made this a must-buy. A magnum of 96 point Gran Reserva that’s drinking now and under £50 on the table is going to be hard to resist.
Luis Gutierrez of The Wine Advocate compares the quality of the “almost-perfect 2005 vintage” to the great Gran Reservas of the 1950s and 60s, so while the wine is ready-to-drink it also has decades ahead of it.” – Armit Wines

“La Rioja Alta celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2015… The quality is as good as ever, with superb wines from the almost-perfect 2005 vintage coming into the market. Great Rioja, as traditional as it gets, in good quantity and moderate (and often plain great) prices.” Luis Gutierrez

“The 2005 Gran Reserva 904 is a superb blend of Tempranillo from the villages of Briñas, Labastida and Villalba with 10% Graciano from Briones and Rodezno. The grapes were destemmed and crushed and fermented in stainless steel for 18 days at 25 C. Malolactic fermentation was spontaneous and lasted 38 days. These wines are marked by a long aging in used American oak barrels following the most strict Riojan tradition; four years during which time the wine was manually racked eight times. This is usually my favorite wine from La Rioja Alta and 2005 is one of its best showings, going back to the quality of the vintages of the 1950s and 60s. The nose is very balsamic with notes of camphor, hints of mint, leather and hung game wrapped around a core of cherries in liqueur. Together it is balanced, subtle, truly elegant and classical. The palate is only medium-bodied but with great concentration of flavors that are very tasty, mineral, almost salty and framed by ultra-fine tannins and smashing balance. A great classic. This wine will be released in October 2015, a full ten years after the vintage. At this quality level this is a bargain. 150,000 bottles produced. Drink 2015-2035”
96 points, Luis Gutierrez, The Wine Advocate #218 April 2015

“Aromas of pine needles, ginger, red fruits and cedar. Mushroom too, plus bark and mint. Complex. Full body, ultra fine tannins and a tangy and bright finish. Makes you want to drink it. Made from 90% tempranillo with 10% graciano from 40+ year-old vineyards in the Briñas, Labastida and Villalba. Drink or hold.”
95 points, James Suckling
