Two Astrolabe Province Wines From Armit

“Bob Campbell MW, the leading critic of New Zealand wines, has named Astrolabe as among the Top Wineries in New Zealand for 2020. In this year’s list, Astrolabe placed at 31 out of nearly 200, right beside the iconic Cloudy Bay, and placing well above better-known names like Dog Point, Kumeu River, and Greywacke.

To help promote this producer, we are offering a free bottle on top of every six you buy for two key wines.

Astrolabe, named after the 19th century ship which first explored the Marlborough region, is commended by Campbell for its own exploration of the area’s sub-zones. Their Province range offers the results of this experimentation, blending fruit from the Wairau, Awatere, and Brancott valleys with vineyards on the Kekerengu Coast. Kekerengu is really key to Astrolabe’s style: it is Marlborough’s most southern subzone with unique limestone soils, which produce a lean, pure style of wine that truly sets Astrolabe apart.” – Armit Wines

9. Torre de Oña Martelo 2014 – (Armit)

La Rioja Alta, is known for their traditional style but they also produce Tempranillo in a more modern guise with their Rioja Alavesa property Torre de Oña, in particular with the Martelo Rioja Reserva. This wine is packaged in vintage-styled wooden slat cases, which are now available in an array of pastel colours. Each bottle is hand-wrapped in tissue paper, matching the colour inside and out!

Produced in an accessible, ripe style, this wine is a real crowd-pleaser. For aficionados, Martelo offers a chance to explore an innovative single-vineyard Rioja, illustrating the variety of subzones in this region. 95% Tempranillo, the wine is harvested as a field blend included 5% of other varieties such as Garnacha, Mazuelo, and even the white Viura. All of the vines are over 60 years old, providing incredible concentration of flavour, which is then maximised by 24 months in French and American oak with weekly lees stirring, and racking every six months by hand and by candlelight.

Colours Available: Pistacchio, Dove Grey, Vanilla, Sky Blue, Classic Wood

“It has incredible aromatics with surprising notes of beef blood, iron and meat with tons of fruit, as Martelo is the vineyard where they find more fruit. This is a very elegant, aromatic and fine Rioja (they decided to bottle it in a Burgundy bottle) and it’s not a coincidence, because that is what they are looking for. The palate follows the same path of finesse, balance and freshness. A very impressive Rioja.”
94 Points, Luis Gutiérrez, the Wine Advocate

8. Tuscany On A Shoestring (Armit)

Tuscany is up there as one of the best winemaking regions in the world and we are very honoured to work with some of the most prestigious and talented producers. Our highlights from our Tuscan portfolio show that not only great quality comes from this region but also wines of great value. We’ve even added in some great deals to give you even more reason to stock up. – Armit Wines

  • Morellino di Scansano 2018, Fattoria Le Pupille: “The 2018 Morellino di Scansano shows nice freshness and very decisive primary fruit. It is a sharp and zippy Morellino, carrying some tones of bitter almond and candied orange peel at the back of forest berry and wild cherry. The blend is 85% Sangiovese, 10% Alicante and 5% Ciliegiolo. This is an easy-drinking red that would feel right at home next to a cheesy baked eggplant dish.” 90 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate. £148.58 per case of 12

  • Poggio Argentato 2018Fattoria Le Pupille:“The 2018 Poggio Argentato is a fresh white that benefitted from a cool May and June and plenty of rain in August. The blend is 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Petit Manseng, 10% Traminer and 5% Semillon. Fermented in tonneaux, the wine has a very precise bouquet, although the mouthfeel still needs to take on more volume and weight. There are nice little aromas of white flowers and honeysuckle. Serve it alongside a plate of spaghetti with vongole and chopped parsley.” 91 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate. £148.27 per case of 12 (Orders: Pratt 1 case)

  • Rosso dei Notri 2018, Tua Rita: “Aromas of chocolate and dark fruit with hints of blackberries, cherries and hazelnuts. Medium body, fine tannins with hints of herbs and dark fruit, and a lovely finish. Sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah. Drink now.” – 92 Points, James Suckling – £75.24 per case of 6 (Orders: Pratt 2 cases)

  • Morellino di Scansano Riserva DOCG 2016, Fattoria Le Pupille: “The wine shows a stunning crispness and a sharp focus in this vintage. It opens to black cherry notes and generous red fruit, with very lightly toasted almond and spice at the back. The mouthfeel is full, and while the bouquet starts off a bit closed, the finish grows steadily in volume and girth. It would be a nice accompaniment to grilled portobello mushrooms. […] This wine offers excellent value from coastal Tuscany.”93+ Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate. £85.14 per case of 6

  • Le Volte dell’Ornellaia 2017, Ornellaia:“Lots of big, dark fruit and a lack of water in the grapes define the unique personality of the 2017 Le Volte dell’Ornellaia. This is a highly extracted and succulent expression that delivers abundant fruit sweetness. The key to this vintage was waiting for proper ripeness, says estate manager and winemaker Axel Heinz. “The grapes continued to get smaller throughout the summer,” he says. That lack of water resulted in very concentrated fruit, giving this entry-level wine a rich and modern feel as a result.”92 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate. £94.65 per case of 6

  • Chianti Classico Riserva Organic 2015Querciabella: “What a sexy nose of red cherries, black fruit, minerals, slate, dried herbs, orange rind and hints of cedar. Full body, fine tannins and a dusty finish. So succulent. Drink now and enjoy. Made from organic grapes.” 92 Points, James Suckling. £140.90 per case of 6

  • Rosso di Montalcino 2016, Siro Pacenti: “The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino is a bright and vibrant red wine that really pops from the glass. It exhibits a cheerful vertical lift that embraces all the senses. That buoyant bouquet is duly followed by robust cherry flavors with an impressive level of richness and concentration. This wine shows good structure and staying power. It has the budding complexity that comes so naturally to the mighty wines of Montalcino. Some 15,000 bottles were made, and you get excellent value with this bottle.”
91+ Points, The Wine Advocate. £116.82 per case of 6

6. Exploring South Africa – A Mixed Case

The case contains x2 bottles of each:

  • Marras Wines, Swartland
    2019 Chenin Blanc
    2018 Shiraz Cinsault

Piekenierskloof is found in the higher extremes of the up and coming Swartland wine region where grapes benefit from a combination of warm daytime temperatures, and cool Atlantic Ocean breezes. Marras Wines is the project of the incredibly talented and dynamic Martin Lamprecht. The grapes for Los Tros Chenin Blanc are handpicked and treated to both tank and barrel fermentation, followed by 6 months ageing on the lees, making a very drinkable pear and stone-fruited wine, complemented by crisp freshness and a round mouthfeel with a refreshing finish. Perfect as an aperitif, this Chenin also pairs well with seafood.
The Marras Swartland Shiraz Cinsault is an exciting blend and, on account of minimal extraction, the resultant wine is bright, fruit forward showing plums, rose petal and smoky spice. The same flavours carry through to the palate, with firm but smooth tannins, toasty oak flavours and a juicy finish. It pairs well with a variety of dishes, includes grilled meats and hard cheeses.

  • Cederberg Private Cellar, Cederberg
    2019 Sauvignon Blanc
    2017 Cabernet Sauvignon

Cederberg is one of the highest, driest and most remote winemaking region in South Africa’s Western Cape – evidenced by the neighbouring astronomical observatory that sits just on the other side of the Dwarsrivier. And Cederberg Private Cellar is the only winery currently making wine in among these mountains. Historically, others have tried and failed, but the Nieuwoudt family has stayed the course.

The Sauvignon Blancshows brilliant citrus, tropical aromas of gooseberry, guava and lemon zest, and hints of green fig and asparagus. Crisp and fresh, there is a delicate creaminess on the palate making it a versatile match for both shellfish and chicken pie.

The remote and harsh terroir yields small but hugely concentrated fruit in the expert hands of the legendary winemaker David Nieuwoudt. His Cederberg Cabernet Sauvignon has an intense blackcurrant core, backed up by undertones of cedar wood, tobacco leaf and subtle smokiness. There is a gorgeous, velvet quality to the palate.

  • Hartenberg Estate, Stellenbosch
    2017 Riesling
    2016 Cabernet Sauvignon

Hartenberg Estate, based in the Bottelary Hills region of Stellenbosch, is one of the most well-known, longest running wineries in South Africa (dating back to the 1600s). Carl Schultz has been at the helm for two decades; his wines are consistently pure, elegant and terroir-driven. He has a deep connection to the land as well as an uncompromising commitment to quality.

The Hartenberg Riesling is one of the very few examples of a Riesling from South Africa. Chalky and flinty on the nose, with surprising weight and concentration and a beautiful lingering finish. There is just a touch of sweetness on the palate but it is the thrilling freshness that impresses. It works well with spice or seafood but you can easily enjoy it on its own.

The Hartneberg Cabernet Shiraz is a near 50-50 blend which has spent a year ageing in French oak. It packs tons of fresh, dark berries, wild herbs and spices, ending in a satisfying, savoury finish; a particularly good match for pizza according to Carl himself!

11. La Rioja Alta Selection Boxes: Last Chance to Buy

“La Rioja Alta are one of the oldest bodegas in Rioja, and a bastion of fine wine. They are known for producing traditional styles of Rioja, ageing wines in American oak from their own cooper, and of the last few producers to rack all their reds by hand and candlelight.

Today, we are delighted to offer you two crafted selection boxes. The first is a selection of the Estate’s best-known wines from the most recent vintages. The second is a true rarity, a vertical of the beloved Viña Ardanza which includes 1989 and 2000, vintages that have all but disappeared from the world, and the legendary 2001 Reserva Especial which James Suckling described as a “unique wine that everyone should try once”, giving it 97 points.

9. Rioja Gran Reserva 904 Library Offer – (Armit Wines)

  • Consistently one of the most impressive Riojas” – Richard Hemming MW, jancisrobinson.com
  • My favourite wine from La Rioja Alta” – Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

The Gran Reserva 904 from La Rioja Alta is consistently one of the best value fine wines on the market. One of the reasons for this is its ability to age gracefully for an immensely long period of time. Today we are offering you the chance to skip a couple of decades and taste this incredible wine from two library vintages: 2000 and 1997.  Both these wines are at their absolute peak and are a joy to open. Drinking perfectly-aged wine is a truly unique experience that is so often limited to those who secured top-class wines upon release and have the patience to leave them alone – no mean feat, particularly for one so delicious as the Gran Reserva 904. These two vintages come directly from the Rioja Alta cellars, where they have been stored for the past twenty years in perfect conditions, exactly as the winemaker intended. Quantities are limited and offered on a first come first served basis. – Armit Wines

5. Mongrana 2017 – (Armit Wines)

Mongrana 2017 is made by pioneering Super-Tuscan estate Querciabella. It is made from vines out in the Maremma, which have been farmed biodynamically since its inception in 2000. In fact, this plot was a chance to experiment with different sustainable techniques before they were rolled out to Querciabella’s original vines in Chianti. Today, it offers one of the best value wines in Tuscany with all of Querciabella’s meticulous attention to detail and winemaking skill at a very reasonable price point. On top of all that it is certified vegan and organic, and is farmed using a groundbreaking biodynamic method free from any animal products.

A blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested by hand and matured for 10 months in cement and stainless steel, this is a juicy, moreish take on the Super-Tuscan formula.

8. The Bancroft Wines Organic Case

At Bancroft Wines we specialise in finding exciting organic wines from around the world from growers who have a deep respect for their environment and a passion for creating remarkably individual wines. To showcase our range, we have put together a mixed organic case for you with some crisp whites and elegant reds, a delicate rosé and an energetic Italian sparkling wine.

x2 bottles of each:
2018 Côtes du Rhône Réserve Grand Veneur
2018 Riesling Trocken Schwarztrauber
2018 Rosat Herència Altés
2015 Les Piliers de Maison Blanche
2016 Carmenere Nuevo Mundo Estate
NV Spumante Ekuò Cielo e Terre

The case of 12 bottles is offered at £171.00 including home delivery

A refreshing blend of local grape varieties, including Roussane and Viognier, Domaine Grand Veneur’s Côtes du Rhône Réserve Blanc has a bouquet of stone fruits and flowers with white peach flavours and a mineral finish – ideal with hearty salads and seafood. Fans of crisp whites will also love Schwarztrauber’s award winning dryRiesling from the Pfalz region of Germany with its zippy citrus flavours. A fine mineral finish and a squeeze of lime makes it the perfect refresher on a bright summer evening. Just as attractive, the Herència Altés rosé from Spain’s wild Terra Alta region has a bright salmon pink colour and a delicate floral bouquet. Old Garnacha vines give this classic an extra layer on the palate. Delicate strawberry and raspberry flavours combine with lovely wild herb notes, a great combination with dried meats and local cheeses.

Château Maison Blanche Les Piliers de Maison Blanche from Montagne-Saint-Emilion is a refined blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. From the excellent 2015 vintage, it also has the advantage of some bottle maturity.  Aromas of cassis and dark berry fruits lead to a rounded palate with supple blackberry and plum flavours and a delicate spice note. Moving to Chile, the Maipo Valley is one of the best places to grow vines in the world and this is where the De Martino family started their now-famousNuevo Mundo winery. They produce several single varietal wines including this lovelyCarmenere which has notes of red pepper and spice on the nose and vibrant red berry fruits on the palate.

Lastly, the Ekuò Spumante by Cielo e Terre, is a delightful blend of Garganega and Trebbiano from grapes grown around Verona and Padua. A dry fizz with a lively mousse, it has a floral bouquet with fresh green apple and pear flavours. The winery has an altruistic approach, donating 5% of their profits to charity which has funded various projects around the world including water wells in Sierre Leone – bubbles with a conscience, and it’s absolutely delicious.

3. 2011 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 (Armit Wines)

Viñedos en otoño, al fondo, Haro, DOC La Rioja, Rioja Alta,
Haro, La Rioja

“2011 in Rioja has been awarded the top rating by the regulatory council, matching the illustrious 2010. Only eight vintages have achieved this accolade in the last fifty years, making 2011 the member of a very elite club for Rioja. With the 2010 vintage all but sold out worldwide, and the next vintage of 904 not until the 2015, this is one to snap up without a shadow of a doubt.

The cellaring potential of this Gran Reserva should be measured in decades rather than years, but with nine years’ age already it is simply beautiful now. Year after year, we see this as one of the best value wines in the world and 2011 certainly reinforces that belief. How many wines of this calibre match this price?

Scores have not yet been published but are set to be released in the coming months. We expect results on par with 2010 so demand is once again set to outstrip supply. We suggest that you secure your allocation now.

Stock arrives in early April. RRP £312.32 a case of 6 In Bond” – Armit Wines

3. The Wines Of Delaire Graff

The history of Delaire Graff dates back to 1688 when the French Huguenots arrived in The Cape, where they accepted an offer of land from The Dutch East India Company’. Trekking over the treacherous mountain pass of Helshoogte into Banhoek, the birth of Franschhoek came about; Franshhoek simply meaning “Corner of France”. The French Settlers brought with them a sound knowledge of viticulture and the art of wine making.

Delaire Graff Estate is stretched on the slopes of the mountain that runs down from the peak spilling onto the farm Botmaskop. The peak of the Helshoogte Pass was the lookout point for ships entering the harbour of Cape Town, where a signal was sent for produce to be sent to the harbour, on the arrival of ships. The lookout was named “Botmans Kop” or “Boatman’s head”.

Delaire Graff Estate is ideally positioned at the crest of the Helshoogte Mountain Pass with panoramic and sweeping views of the awe-inspiring Banhoek Valley, flanked by the Simonsberg and Groot Drakenstein Mountains.

The farm was bought by John Platter in 1982, changing the then name of Avontuur to Delaire Estate which means “From the Sky”, and thereafter Laurence Graff bought the farm in 1987.

  1. 2018 Sauvignon Blanc, Delaire Graff, Western Cape @ £10.96 per bottle: Produced from grapes from Stellenbosch, Olifantsrivier, Darling and Durbanville, the Delaire Graff Sauvignon Blanc is an example of a typical maritime version of this variety. Green asparagus, freshly-cut grass and tinges of citrus fruit greet the nose. Upon tasting, anticipate notes of zingy fruit and Cape gooseberry. In terms of mouthfeel, the wine has several layers, including a refreshing crispiness. The finish has a delicate mineral character
  2. 2018 Chenin Blanc Swartland Reserve, Delaire Graff, Swartland @ £12.19 per bottle: Challenging conditions, including extended warm weather and little rainfall, led to a reduced crop in 2016. However, the dry conditions headed vineyards and grapes which were very healthy overall. Vines produced lower bunch masses with smaller berries and concentrated flavours promising good wines. Light golden wheat colour. Layered expressions of citrus and tropical fruit with subtle layers of honey and almonds in the background. Balanced and superbly structured, the flavours are complimented by a delicate minerality.
  3. 2018 Chardonnay Banghoek Reserve, Delaire Graff @ £14.30 per bottle: The Delaire Graff Chardonnay Banghoek Reserve is from Delaire Graff Estate mountain vineyards. All the grapes were handpicked in the early hours over various ripening periods. Once back at the winery the grapes were whole bunch pressed and barrel fermented. Maturation took place in 225 litre French oak barrels (40% new) for 10 months. This Chardonnay is elegant with layered nuances of vanilla, peaches and honeycomb. A hint of minerality adds to a long, lingering finish.
  4. 2019 Cabernet Franc Rosé, Delaire Graff, Stellenbosch @ £9.89 per bottle: A rich and fruity dry rosé wine with strawberry, candied cherry and blackcurrant notes followed by a persistent creamy finish. Easy drinking, and pairs well with charcuterie, paté, white meats, soft cheeses and salads.
  5. 2018 Shiraz, Delaire Graff, Stellenbosch @ £11.13 per bottle: The wine was matured for twelve months in old French oak barrels to maintain the freshness of this varietal. Fermentation took place at cooler temperatures to ensure gentle extraction of fruit flavours. This juicy, ripe and approachable Shiraz with its ruby colour and purple tints has a spicy white pepper undertone as well as lavender and dark red fruit aromas of mulberries. It is characterised by versatility, demonstrating a smooth a soft palate with a savoury finish.
  6. 2017 Botmaskop, Delaire Graff, Stellenbosch @ £17.82 per bottle: This Bordeaux blend (Blend: 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 9% Petit Verdot, 6% Merlot, 3% Malbec) is rich, intense full-bodied wine with blackberry, cassis, liquorice, and spice notes on the nose and the palate. With its soft tannins, this is an easy drinking red wine which will pair well with red meats and medium to mature cheeses.
  7. 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Delaire Graff, Stellenbosch @ £43.34 per bottle: Velvet textured, complex and powerful. Cassis, dark fruit and spicy flavours dominate in a layered and lingering delivery. The wine is suited for aging of 6-10 years.

Offer ends 12 January 2020
