Alsace 2017 – Grands Crus of Schlumberger

Alsace – 2017 Vintage

“A cold winter, warm spring and warm summer with sufficient rainfall added up to create a very good vintage for Alsace in 2017. Good conditions throughout the harvest season allowed for excellence across all varieties and at all sweetness levels, with no particular extremes. The only drawback is yields reduced by up to a third thanks mostly to spring frosts.” – Jancis Robinson MW

Schlumberger

“Schlumberger is Alsace’s largest estate with some 140 hectares under vine, half of them occupying grand cru sites. The domaine was started in 1810 by Nicolas Schlumberger. The vineyards are, for the most part, on beautifully laid steep terraces up to an altitude of 380m where horses are required to work the land instead of machinery. Nearly half the vineyard is farmed organically, of which 30 hectares are farmed biodynamically.”

Schlumberger Grands Crus

Grand Cru Kitterlé:One of Alsace’s top grands crus; pink sandstone and volcanic rocks. Riesling, pinot gris and gewrurztraminer all do well here. Extremely steep vineyards. Strong but subtle wines

Grand Cru Saering: Sandy-clay soil with limestone; only riesling from the best parcels makes it into the grand cru wine. Venerable cru (first mentioned in 1250) renowned for balanced and refined wines

Grand Cru Kessler: One of Alsace’s top grands crus. Sandy-clay and pink limestone. Best for pinot gris or gewurztraminer. A protected amphitheatre of vines
