3. 2017 Domaine de Villaine Bouzeron ‘La Cuvee de Printemps’ – (5th October)

“This is an offer of Aligote, but bear with me for a moment…Domaine de Villaine is the home of Aubert & Pamela de Villaine, the co-owners of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. Today, the domaine is run by Pierre de Benoist, the nephew of the de Villaines. He sums up the reason why they continue to persist with Aligote perfectly: “Aligote, more than Chardonnay, keeps the memory of the seabed that we once were. Romance in winemaking is dead, but growing Aligote is all about passion and romance.” We’ve been fans of the wines of de Villaine for several years now, and when we were offered exclusivity on a new cuvee from the domaine, La Cuvee de Printemps, we snapped it up. In addition to the de Villaines, some of the most cherished names in Burgundy continue to lovingly craft Aligote for a fraction of the price of their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir based wines, including Leroy, Coche-Dury, Roulot, Ramonet, and Ponsot. Neal Martin is also a big fan of the wines of Domaine de Villaine, and with names like this behind it, surely it has to be worth a look?” – Michael Robins, Laytons

£138.00  per case of six including duty, VAT & delivery – 40 cases available

2. Champagne Pierre Gimonnet – (4th October)

  • NV Cuis 1er Cru, Champagne Gimonnet

“Deliciously precise with high toned citrus fruit providing thrilling focus and definition. White flowers and crisp apple join chorus making this supremely refreshing as well as exceedingly moreish. This really speaks of the character of Cuis – the heart and soul of Gimonnet’s vineyard holdings. 17 Points, Jancis Robinson MW, 92 Points, Wine Spectator.

£23.80 per 75cl bottle (also available in halves @ £13.96 & magnums @ £51.80)

  • 2010 Fleuron 1er Cru, Champagne Gimonnet

This superb Blanc de Blancs from Gimonnet captures the true taste of this domaine in a single blend. Offering ample fruit with lingering apple and pears, it has a creamy bead and fine chalk texture of mineral grip and character and possesses intense structural precision. Simply sumptuous.  “This vintage Champagne is fantastic value for money” – Dawn Davies MW

£31.00 per 75cl bottle

  • 2012 Special Club, Champagne Gimonnet

Gimonnet believes that Cramant is the best vineyard that they have for Blanc de Blancs Champagne. Made from vineyards more than 50 years old but some are as old as 100.  A singular expression of Champagne of purity, elegance and harmony.  A mere 3,000 bottles made. “The 2012 Brut Spécial Club Oger Grand Cru is a relatively soft, open-knit Champagne by Gimonnet standards, which, among other things, means it will drink well upon release. Expressive orchard fruit, lemon confit, white flower and vanillin notes, along with gentle contours, all give the 2012 its considerable near and medium-term appeal. There is a lovely sense of radiance to the 2012. Disgorged: May 2016”. – Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media (90 points)

SEPTEMBER 2018

YALUMBA Y Series – (Offer open from 15 September to 31 December 2018)

The Yalumba Wine Company is Australia’s oldest family-owned winery. Currently run by Robert and Sam Hill Smith, the winery is situated in the Barossa Valley where there are plantings of some of the world’s oldest vines. Yalumba was founded by a British brewer, Samuel Smith, who emigrated to Australia with his family from Dorset in 1847. In 1949, Smith purchased a 30 acre block of land on the edge of a settlement and planted his first vineyards. He named his property ‘Yalumba’, an indigenous Australian word meaning ‘all the land around.’ Yalumba now owns over 1000 acres of vineyards in the Barossa, Clare and Eden valleys, as well as buying in grapes from selected growers, some of whom they have been working with for four or more generations.

This property is a beacon of hands-on winemaking. No aspect of the process is left to chance, as evidenced by the master coopers crafting oak barrels on site and a vine nursery where both new and established varieties are propagated. Yalumba is quite unusual in making wines at all price levels from entry level to fine and sought-after and The Society regularly follows premium labels Signature, The Menzies and Mesh labels, as well as everyday classics including Heggies Chardonnay.

Six bottle cases of each wine are offered at £44.97

  1. Yalumba Y Series Riesling
  2. Yalumba Y Series Sauvignon Blanc
  3. Yalumba Y Series Chardonnay
  4. Yalumba Y Series Shiraz
  5. Yalumba Y Series Cabernet Sauvignon

AUGUST 2018

1.Torres Spain, Salmos 2014/15 Cariñena, Garnacha & Syrah, Priorat – (£94.34).

This Wine is a homage to the monks of the courageous carthusian order, who arrived in ‘Priorat’, in 1095, where they cultivated vines. In 1835 a violent crowd destroyed the work of a lifetime and sacked the monastery, events which later culminated in the auctioning of church lands known as the “Desamortización de Mendizábal”. In 1996 the Torres Family began work on the planting of vineyards on the slopes strewn with the hard, black slate-like “Licorella” stone.”

WILLIAM FÈVRE CHABLIS – (28 April)

William Fèvre is one of Chablis’ greatest wine domaines, developed by the eponymous William Fèvre between 1957 and his retirement in 1998 when he sold to the Champagne House Joseph Henriot. William Fèvre began with just 7 hectares and had soon increased this to 48ha, planting widely in the best of the 1ers and grands crus where the vineyards had fallen by the wayside. However the Fèvre penchant for new oak was not to everybody’s taste.

Since the Henriot purchase the wines are made by the talented Didier Séguier who had previously been with the Bouchard team in Beaune. The domaine wines include 12 hectares of premier cru vineyards and no less than 16 hectares of grand crus. The whole crop of their domaine wines, straight Chablis included, is harvested by hand, the grands crus in small ‘cagettes’, with a sorting table back at the winery to ensure the quality of the raw material.

Viña Ardanza Reserva 2009 – Worldwide Exclusive Release (1st March)

“We are delighted to announce the Worldwide exclusive release of the 2009 vintage of La Rioja Alta S.A.’s Viña Ardanza Reserva. A highpoint for any Rioja lover and indeed anyone with a keen eye on the best affordable wines available.
Viña Ardanza was registered in 1942 and takes its name from one of the five families who founded La Rioja Alta S.A. in 1890. It is the wine which earned the most fame and popularity for La Rioja Alta S.A. and became an icon. Its intrinsic quality, character and ageability have made it a benchmark for the winery.
Viña Ardanza Reserva is only released in vintages that express the vineyards’ full potential and thanks to exceptional weather throughout the 2009 growing season, the grapes were harvested in magnificent condition with perfect levels of ripeness and freshness. The 2009 vintage has officially been rated “very good” and following the estates extraordinary attention to detail in achieving the highest quality wine, this latest Ardanza continues to astonish its loyal followers. The wine fills the criteria to be labelled as a Gran Reserva but the winery chooses to release it as a Reserva when it is ready for drinking.
After the success of 2008, this is the 2nd vintage where all the Garnacha comes from the spectacular estate of La Pedriza, in Tudelilla (Rioja Baja). At an altitude of 550m above sea level and with some of the oldest soils in Europe, this 67 ha property offers unbeatable conditions for growing this variety. Its nutrient poor soil, covered with boulders, results in low grape yields (less than 5.000 kg/ha) and significant varietal typicity, rich in aromas, with a most satisfying, elegant structure.” – Armit Wines

Price: £172 per 12 bottles in Bond. Price valid until Sunday 18th March 2018.
Shipment anticipated Spring 2018.

Founded in 1972 before Ribera del Duero DO was created in 1982. A living icon of Spanish wine and widely regarded as the “Master of the Tempranillo” Alejandro Fernández achieves naturally concentrated, elegant wines which are expressive in youth yet benefit greatly from age. Currently under vine in Pesquera are 500 acres, exclusively Tempranillo. Soil types include deep gravel relatively rare in the area and essential to the singularly complex “Pesquera” bouquet.

Sassicaia 2015 – (2nd February)

“We are delighted to announce the release of the 2015 vintage of Sassicaia from Tenuta San Guido. The 2015 vintage once again captures the essence of this truly unique terroir showcasing generous and refined black fruit aromas, perfectly balanced as always by beautiful freshness and elegance. There has been much excitement about 2015 in Tuscany which the estate compares to the very famous 1985 vintage. Both shared similar climatic conditions – a mild winter that was followed by heavy rains in the spring and a hot summer, with higher than average temperatures in June and July, resulting in a very healthy vineyard and excellent ripening of the grapes.

The 2015 is one of their best ever vintages; the purity and restraint of Sassicaia combines with the power that characterises the 2015 vintage throughout Bolgheri. In addition to Sassicaia, we are extremely proud to offer Guidalberto 2016 and Le Difese 2016. As always, the other wines from this great estate offer exceptional value.” – Armit Wines

Please note: As Sassicaia is only available by allocation, Members should register interest as soon as possible. Shipment anticipated April 2018.

  1. Sassicaia 2015, £486 per 6 Bottles (75cl) In Bond
  2. Guidalberto 2016, £106 per 6 Bottles (75cl) In Bond
  3. Le Difese 2016, £56 per 6 Bottles (75cl) In Bond

Guidalberto is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot that carries the hallmark elegance and finesse that runs through Sassicaia, the sweet fruited Tuscan character of the Bolgheri area and the enticing aromas that Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are capable of creating together. Spending twenty months in one-third new oak barrels, this wine is irresistible two years from release yet has a proven track record of ageing well into a decade.

Le Difese is a nod towards the indigenous varieties of the region combining the appealing Mediterranean characteristics of Sangiovese with the depth of Cabernet Sauvignon to make a delicious wine that is ready to be enjoyed from release.

A Brief History of Sassicaia: In the 1940s, a project of passion was born when the truly visionary Marchese Mario Incisa Della Rochetta realised the vast potential of Bordeaux varieties in Bolgheri, a coastal area of Tuscany previously unknown for its wine production. This project was honed over twenty years and only shared with close friends and neighbours at the time. However, the great quality on display could not be kept a secret forever and eventually under immense pressure from their peers the family released the first commercial vintage of Sassicaia in 1968. Since then, accolades and acclaim have followed one of the most profound Cabernet dominant wines in the world to become the flagship Super Tuscan, and arguably Italy’s most important wine.

Sporting a very different style to Marlborough, this Sauvignon Blanc has benefitted from some small, judicious additions of Semillon and Sauvignon Gris. Toasty, mellow but very well-integrated oak is evident from 100% barrel fermentation, one third of which was new oak. Although some of the more typical, pungent, Sauvignon Blanc characters are apparent on the vibrant nose, the rich and fleshy palate has greater weight and concentration. A very ripe, almost tropical, fruit style but with a long, bone dry finish. – Andy Howard MW, Decanter
