Spring In The Rheingau – 2020

 

Following the successful wine tour of autumn 2018, the Society is planning a Spring In The Rheingau tour in 2020, to taste and buy wines from the highly acclaimed 2018 vintage

 

 

  • The 10 day tour will be in May 2020 and will run from Saturday 16 to Monday 25
  • Travel to Germany will be by large, luxury coach with Hull/Rotterdam/Hull overnight crossings in outside special cabins
  • The tour will be viable with a minimum of 20 members
  • The tour will be based in Assmannshausen using Hotel Zwei Mohren
  • Focus will be on the Rheingau and tastings will be with growers not visited during the 2018 tour

 

Provisional Itinerary

Day 1 – Saturday

  • Mid-afternoon coach from Harrogate to Hull.
  • Overnight P&O ferry to Rotterdam. Day 2 – Sunday

Day 2 – Sunday

  • Arrive Rotterdam and disembark after breakfast
  • Drive to Amsterdam via the Hague (~i hr.)
  • Vist Van Gogh Museum for a pre-booked, guided tour*
  • Drive to Assmannshausen with a picnic lunch en route (420 km. ~4 hrs. 30 min. via Dusseldorf and Cologne)
  • Arrive Assmannshausen and check in at Hotel Zwei Mohren ( 7 nights B&B)

*Van Gogh Museum Tour: This will be a 50-minute private guided tour along Vincent van Gogh’s masterpieces. An expert guide shows Vincent’s earliest Dutch works, how his approach changed in Paris when he met modern artists and how he developed his famous individual style in the south of France.

Day 3 – Monday

  • Drive to Bacharach after breakfast.
  • Tasting at Toni Jost
  • Lunch at a local restaurant
  • Cruise on the Rhine from Bacharach to Assmannshausen
  • Evening free

Day 4 – Tuesday

  • Drive to Rudesheim after Breakfast
  • Tasting at George Breuer
  • PICNIC IN THE VINEYARDS – A spectacular 5km hike through the vineyards from Rüdesheim to Assmannshausen accompanied by a George Breuer tour guide. A table will be laid in the vineyards for a picnic lunch with wine arranged by George Breuer
  • Rest of the day is free

Day 5- Wednesday

  • Drive to Eltville im Rheingau after breakfast
  • Tour of monastery, tasting and lunch at Kloster Eberbach
  • Visit Hochheim
  • Evening free

Day 6 – Thursday

  • Drive to Oestrich-Winkel after breakfast
  • Visit and tasting at Schloss Vollards followed by lunch at the estate’s Gutsrestaurant
  • Evening free

Day 7 – Friday

  • Drive to Geisenheim after breakfast.
  • Visit & tasting at Schloss Johannisberg
  • Lunch at Johannisberg
  • Visit Geisenheim Research Institute
  • Optional dinner at RÜDESHEIMER SCHLOSS

Day 8 – Saturday

 

  • Free day
  • Farewell dinner at Zwei Mohren

Day 9 – Sunday

  • Drive to Cologne after breakfast
  • Guided tour of Cologne cathedral
  • Picnic lunch
  • Drive to Rotterdam
  • Overnight ferry to Hull

Day 10 – Monday

  • Arrive Hull
  • Disembark after breakfast
  • Drive to Harrogate
