Gabriel and Sarah poured the Gramona. It was the only non-Sicilian wine at the Lunch. I wanted Donnafugata Brut not even the winery in Marsala had any 2014 left. The Gramona was the Imperial Gran Reserva 2013. It is difficult to get excited about Cava but this is special. I first tasted the Xarel·lo and Macabeu blend with a touch of Chardonnay at that incredible wineshop in Madrid – Lavinia, years ago and was hooked. If there is no Donnafugata, it had to be Gramona!
The 28 of us, mostly members of the Harrogate Medical Wine Society, were in a basement room at Sasso, a little Italian restaurant in Harrogate. We sipped Planeta’s 2016 Eruzione Bianco 1614 made with Carricante from the slopes of Etna with a dash of Riesling and ate chef Stafano’s Arancino with Saffron, Ragú, Peas, Cheese & Pistachio Pesto.
With Aubergine stuffed with Mozzarella, Courgettes & Herbs and served with Tomato and melted Caciocavallo Cheese, we drank Tasca d’Almerita’s Vigna San Francesco” Chardonnay 2016.
Planeta;s 2016 Dorilli Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico, a blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato and Tasca d’Almerita’s top wine – Sicilia Contea di Sclafani DOC “Rosso Del Conte” 2014, a blend of Nero d’Avola and Pericone were pored with Beef Sirloin slow cooked and grilled, served in a Red Wine Sauce with Sicilian style Diced Vegetables.
Pellegrino’s Passito Pantelleria 2017 was served with Sweet Ricotta Cheese and Pistachio Cake with an Orange Sauce and Marsala and Vanilla Ice Cream. We sipped espressos, thanked the staff and walked out into the summer sunshine.
