Arancini & Caricante – A Summer Lunch With Flavors Of Sicily

Gabriel and Sarah poured the Gramona. It was the only non-Sicilian wine at the Lunch. I wanted Donnafugata Brut not even the winery in Marsala had any 2014 left. The Gramona was the Imperial Gran Reserva 2013. It is difficult to get excited about Cava but this is special. I first tasted the Xarel·lo and Macabeu blend with a touch of Chardonnay at that incredible wineshop in Madrid – Lavinia, years ago and was hooked. If there is no Donnafugata, it had to be Gramona!

The 28 of us, mostly members of the Harrogate Medical Wine Society, were in a basement room at Sasso, a little Italian restaurant in Harrogate. We sipped Planeta’s 2016 Eruzione Bianco 1614 made with Carricante from the slopes of Etna with a dash of Riesling and ate chef Stafano’s Arancino with Saffron, Ragú, Peas, Cheese & Pistachio Pesto.

With Aubergine stuffed with Mozzarella, Courgettes & Herbs and served with Tomato and melted Caciocavallo Cheese, we drank Tasca d’Almerita’s Vigna San Francesco” Chardonnay 2016.

Planeta;s 2016 Dorilli Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico, a blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato and Tasca d’Almerita’s top wine – Sicilia Contea di Sclafani DOC “Rosso Del Conte” 2014, a blend of Nero d’Avola and Pericone were pored with Beef Sirloin slow cooked and grilled, served in a Red Wine Sauce with Sicilian style Diced Vegetables.

Pellegrino’s Passito Pantelleria 2017 was served with Sweet Ricotta Cheese and Pistachio Cake with an Orange Sauce and Marsala and Vanilla Ice Cream. We sipped espressos, thanked the staff and walked out into the summer sunshine.

  1. “We all enjoyed the excellent finale to the HMWS 29th year.
Sasso is an ideal central venue and the meal and Sicilian wines were well chosen. Planeta and Regaleali are so reliable and, of course, the fellowship helped to make the day.
Our thanks to you and the restaurant staff.
    Here’s to the 30th year!
    Best wishes”

  2. Thank you for organising such a festive summer celebration. I especially enjoyed tasting the Planeta and Tasca wines as they brought back such pleasant memories of our stays at those beautiful wineries.
The food at Sasso’s was excellent as usual; perhaps, though, we could have either smaller potions or fewer courses?
All in all, it was a lovely place to while away a summer afternoon – I hope we’ll do it again!
    Best wishes,

  3. Just a quick note of thanks for a very enjoyable afternoon at Sasso’s. The food was again excellent. Having tasted 4 of the wines in Sicily in May we came with very high expectations of the wines and these were certainly fulfilled. This Zibibbo was new to us but also very enjoyable. The whole event was very convivial and I know that Clive thoroughly enjoyed the experience and felt that he learned something about wine from the people around him. He would certainly like to repeat the experience which is the greatest endorsement.
Thanks for the time, energy and knowledge in making it all happen – again!
    Best regards,

  4. Thank you so much for organising the Summer Lunch at Sasso’s yesterday. What a super event, the delicious wines and Italian cuisine matched perfectly. Everyone I am sure enjoyed themselves as much as we all did on table 2. What a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon. You and Sasso’s did us proud. Thank you very much again. – Ann and Charles Joslin, Harrogate

  5. A very big thank you for organising the excellent Sicilian Lunch at Sasso. An excellent venue with extremely pleasant and attentive staff. The food complimented the excellent wines perfectly. You had gone to a lot of trouble to ensure everything was perfect and it is appreciated. A fitting end to the 29th year. Thank you.
