2017 Summer Lunch

The Summer Lunch is held to mark the end of the “academic year” of the Harrogate Medical Wine Society and as always, the accent is on wine rather than food – another occasion to enjoy good wine with friends and colleagues

Laurent-Perrier NV was served on arrival. The 50% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir 35 % and 15% Pinot Meunier blend has 20% reserve wines and a light dosage. It was cellared aged for 3 years before release. The grapes come from 55 crus and the high proportion of Chardonnay in the blend makes the wine light and crisp.

Rafael Palacios’ celebrated Godello – As Sortes 2014 was sipped with smoked salmon and prawn roulard with horseradish cream, lime dressing, dressed salad leaves and ciabatta crisps. It is a blend of Godello from seven plots in Valdeorras planted with old vines ranging from 40 to 96 years of age. The 2014s have a good combination of low pH and ripeness. The must was fermented in 500L French oak barrels with indigenous yeasts and matured in contact with the fine lees for some six months. It has great precision with deep flavors and pungent, sharp acidity and minerality laced with some creaminess. It has a great combination of power and elegance.  22,400 bottles were produced.
Two reds – Warwick Estate Trilogy 2012 and Prats & Symington Chryseia 2012, both en magnum, partnered slow braised lamb rump with crushed herb potato, pea puree, glazed carrot & asparagus with a mint and red wine filled ravioli jus. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc and 14% Merlot. Trilogy comes from the oldest, most established vineyards on Warwick Estate and spends 26 months in 225L tight grain French oak barrels of which 62 % are new. Chryseia is produced from the finest quality grapes from the Symington’s two Upper Douro Valley vineyards, Quinta de Roriz and Quinta da Perdiz. Another property, Quinta da Vila Velha, which is privately owned by a member of the Symington family, also contributed some of its best grapes, as it has for every vintage of Chryseia. The nose yields fresh berries, toastiness and notes of cardamom and mint. Silky and ripe palate with mineral notes and great length.
Domaine Lasserre 2014, Jurancon – luscious tropical fruit and crystallised grapefruit from Gros & Petit Manseng accompanied a vanilla Pannacotta with fresh strawberry mini curd tart and a chocolate brownie with white chocolate ice cream.
Graham’s Malvedos 2004 was poured with a new Blue Cheese – Duke of Wellington, produced by Cryer & Stott in Wakefield to celebrate the Duke buying Hotel de Charost in France as the British Embassy 200 years ago. it is creamy and strong with a salty bite.  Malvedos is the original Graham’s Quinta and is recognized as one of the finest estates in the Douro. The Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francêsca, Tinta Barroca and Touriga Nacional blend is bottled without filtration. It is concentrated, spicy and sweet with masses of black fruit.
Tea and Coffee with Mints followed.

“Summer Lunch at Pannal Golf Club celebrating the end of HMWS’s 26th year was quite outstanding. The food and wine were superb. The meal presentation from chef John Kershaw was at least one star Michelin standard and your carefully chosen wines matched the meal quality. The ambience and privacy of our function was ideal. Our thanks to Bernard and Ramani as we look forward to the start of the next ‘academic year’. Aren’t we lucky?”- Alisdair and Elma (Stewart), Harrogate

“What a lovely way to celebrate our 26th anniversary on Sunday at Pannal Golf club, with a fantastic lunch and equally fantastic wines. Those magnums were wonderful. You never fail, Bernard to make these occasions memorable with such generous amounts of food and wine, with carefully chosen menus. It was a very sociable afternoon amongst fellow members you even organised good weather. Are there no end to your talents? Thank you to you and Ramani for organising it for us all.” – Charles & Ann Joslin, Harrogate

“Ann & I greatly enjoyed the summer lunch at Pannal Golf Club this afternoon. The venue is striking and the vista from the front of the club was beautiful. The meal was really good and the wines superb, complementing the courses well. The As Sortes and Chryseia was the wines we enjoyed most, as others on our table agreed. Many thanks for setting up the event, sourcing the wines and hosting the afternoon. We also would thank Peter Murphy for pouring the Champagne and the magnums on table two, also for providing a great Gerald Thomas white for two people who do not enjoy young red wines. The autumn lunch has much to live up to, but it will probably do as well!!!” – Dr. Stephen Cameron, Pick Hill

“Thank you on behalf of Pat and myself for arranging today’s luncheon. It was excellent. The ambiance was first class, the food was very tasty and complemented by great wines.  It was a pleasure to taste the As Sortes as the first white which was a great starter.  Also to be able to sample the reds in magnum complemented the well chosen food. The venue was ideal on a Sunday lunch where we (were) able to meet with friends of many years. Long may it continue.” – Pat & David Morris, Harrogate

“We will be with you in spirit! But drowning in fresh seafood and albarino!” – Sian Gamble, Cambados Albarino Festival, Galicia (via Facebook)

“I am so pleased that you enjoyed everything today… John is an absolute gem at his cooking and I’m glad we looked after you well… it is an absolute pleasure to be able to do lunches like this.” – Jaine Collington, Pannal Golf Club, Harrogate

“Thank you so much for organising yesterday’s Summer Lunch.  What a lovely way to spend a sunny summer afternoon sharing good food and excellent wines with friends.  The wines really were superb and I particularly enjoyed the As Sortes with the salmon, it brought back memories of tasting it at the wine bar in Santiago de Compostela and I also enjoyed the Chryseia with the lamb. Thank you for all your hard work in organising tastings and “foodie “events for the membership, we do appreciate your hard work and dedication.” – Carole Wood, Ackworth

“Thank you for a lovely lunch (&) tasting, the wines were fine and the food excellent, the company as always, excellent.” – Tony Stanier

“We both enjoyed the Summer Lunch very much — the meal was good (thank you for organising fish for Rhiannon) and the wines superb as usual !  The Asos (As Sortes?) was to my taste but not Rhiannon’s oddly, the Warwick is a superb wine and we are both port lovers!! It was a lovely event –  wish it was on every Sunday! Thank you for all the time and effort you put into organising all the Events for HMWS” – Gwynneth Owen, Leeds

“The lunch yesterday looked excellent and we are sorry we could not make it due to us attending another function.” – Pat Shore, Harrogate

“I am pleased you enjoyed your recent meal at the club. Many thanks for your kind comments which are much appreciated by staff.” – Ruth Skaife-Clarke, Administration Manager, Pannal Golf Club
