Portugal Revisited – 9. A Few Days At Quinta Nova

The drive from Melgaço took three hours. The A4 to Villa Real is a splendid road and from Vale de Nogueiras the narrow country road twisted and turned its way over the mountains to Quinta Nova at Covas do Douro. The scenery was breathtaking.

“Quinta Nova” Pedro said pointing at an elegant white villa with red tiles on the roof way below us as he negotiated the winding mountain road down to the Douro Valley. Quinta Nova was going to be our home in the Douro for the next three nights.

Quinta Nova, owned by the cork giant Amorim, is a fully working wine estate with its own winery and at the same time, a stylish and very Portuguese luxury wine hotel.

The rooms are stylish and the view over the terraced vineyards to the blue waters of the Douro River below is magnificent. The shady terrace with blue, scented Jacaranda outside stretches as far as the little chapel and the pool with icy water, which only the foolish would dive into. It is the ideal place sit with a drink or book in hand and watch rabelo boats float past in the river.

Chilled Quinta Nova Pomares Branco 2015 – a blend of Viosinho, Gouveio and Rabigato was drunk on the terrace that evening and Grainha Branco 2015 (a blend of Viosinho, Gouveio and oak-fermented Rabigato), Quinta Nova Tinto – an unoaked red and Quinta Nova Reserva (mostly Tinta Amarela and a touch of Touriga Nacional – aromatic and spicy) were poured with dinner.

A Walk In The Vineyards

The 120 hectare estate has 85 hectares of Touring Nacional and Touring Franca vines. The first vintage was in 2005.

The vineyard is criss-crossed with well made walking paths. One of them leads downhill to the river and the little riverside chapel with a statue of Nosso Senhora where rabelo boat crews transporting barrels of port down river through treacherous rapids to the lodges in Porto used stop and pray for protection before the Douro was dammed.

Quinta Nova is a magical place and the stay there was enchanting.

Our stay at Quinta Nova was arranged by Mafalda Nicolau de Almeida of Miles Away
