Jancis Robinson MW chose Waterkloof Seriously Cool Cinsault 2013 as her Wine of The Week a few days ago. Waterkloof is a seriously cool South African winery with fabulous wines
One bright spring morning we were tasting in Stellenbosch – first at Stellenzicht and then, Ken Forrester. Both were good tastings but the tasting and lunch at Waterkloof later that day, was phenomenal.
We drove to Somerset West, turned off Sir Lowry’s Pass Road and climbed 300 m up Schapenberg Mountain through the 53 hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards of Waterkloof Estate which English wine merchant Paul Boutinot started in 2004. The modern glass and concrete winery at the top of the hill, built by Oz architects was like a set from a James Bond film.
We tasted the impressive Waterkloof, Circle of Life and Circumstance range with cellar master Nadia Barnard in the cavernous tasting room. I am not a big fan of Sauvignon Blanc but the wine that impressed me most then was their SB.
The view from the glass-fronted restaurant that clings to the side of the winery was stunning. And so was the lunch. As we dined and wined, we could see all the way to the False Bay coast 4 km away.
